Benigno Mejia, Honduras Parainema

Benigno Mejia's Parainema is back on our menu! It's one of our favorite lots from Santa Barbara (Honduras, not Cali), and we're thrilled to ring in 2022 with its luscious, sweet-tart cheer.

The Two Benignos

In 2018, our friend Benjamin Paz introduced us to Benigno Mejia while we were visiting Honduras. His farms are run and managed by his son, Benigno—or “Ninito”, and they grow Parainema on 3.5 hectares of producing land where the family's been growing specialty coffee for over a decade. This is our third year purchasing Benigno's coffee, and this season we're all over its gentle pink lemonade sweetness and white cranberry & rhubarb tang with herbaceous finish.

GGET Coffee Geography

I like big beans & I can not lie

Parainema, a big-beaned Sarchimor hybrid developed by IHCAFE in Honduras, is known by producers for its coffee-leaf-rust-resistance and optimal growth at lower elevations. For roasters and consumers, it's known for having an incredibly unique flavor profile including intense, vibrant acidity and herbal qualities. This flavor profile is even more striking when coffee has been fully washed, like Benigno's.
