We were really impressed with Nyungwe from our first taste during the sample cupping. Look for citric flavors like Meyer lemon custard and Mandarin, along with warmer and richer flavors like vanilla, chocolate-covered cherries, and toffee.
Rwanda is a small but tremendously beautiful country roughly comparable in size to Massachusetts, located immediately south of Uganda and north of Tanzania. While we don’t have any direct relationships in Rwanda, we want to continue to showcase coffees from the country, given their incredibly high potential and unique profile in the greater African landscape.
This particular coffee comes from the Nyungwe Washing Station. This station was built in 2006 and named after the nearby Nyungwe natural forest, the southernmost source of the River Nile. The station officially began purchasing cherries and operating the mill in March 2014. Like many other stations we buy from in Ethiopia and Kenya, this mill will generally buy from around 1000 small-holder farmers, who will likely have less than three hundred coffee trees on their farms. Through the Rwanda Trading Company, which owns the mill, farmers are given access to agronomical training and financial literacy courses, as well as seed stock so they can continue replanting aging trees.
