ABOUT WORKA CHELBESA
Neguesse Debela has not been in the coffee industry long. Nuguesse was known in Ethiopia for running a successful computer part import company. While coffee does not seem like a natural leap, Nuguesse was inspired on a trip to Minnesota where at a cafe he had a pour-over that
or him was an epiphany. At that moment he realized the potential of coffee in his home country and upon his return he went right to work setting his company SNAP on a course to be one of the best quality exporters in Ethiopia. Nuguesse, with the help of Abenezer Asafaw, his quality control and coffee manager, has since bought land for SNAP to process coffee themselves but has also started managing processing sites in Nensebo, Gedeb, and Guji. In early 2019, SNAP finished the final touches on their export dry mill, giving them full control of their product and quality.
Compared to other regions within Ethiopia, the Gedeb region, where this coffee is grown, is relatively new to coffee production (20-30 years), but in the last decade has become well-known for producing spectacular coffees. Worka Chelbessa was the highest-scoring washed coffee we tasted this year.
